About the role and team

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Eater Real Time Pricing team, you will shape the surge pricing algorithms that keep Uber's delivery marketplace healthy. Our systems produce real-time decision signals that other critical systems — matching, courier pricing, promotions — depend on every second. The team sits at the intersection of the supply and demand sides of the business: when our pricing is right, the marketplace balances; when it is off, consumers and couriers feel it within minutes.

This role is for an engineer ready to own hard, ambiguous problems: pricing under extreme demand, forecasting supply and demand ahead of time, and evolving decision signals into complete products. The problems are complex, the systems are global, and the starting point is rarely clear. We are looking for a senior engineer who thinks in systems, raises the technical bar of everyone around them, and wants their design decisions to move a marketplace measurably. If you are energized by owning outcomes — not just code — this is where you'll grow.

What you'll do

- Lead the design and delivery of major surge pricing and forecasting workstreams end-to-end — from ambiguous problem statement through architecture, rollout, and measurable marketplace impact.

- Set technical direction for real-time pricing systems that serve decision signals to matching, courier pricing, and other downstream consumers at high throughput and low latency.

- Drive engineering rigor across the team: design reviews, operational excellence, and systems that degrade gracefully under extreme demand — and be a calm, decisive presence when production is on the line.

- Partner closely with Applied Science, Product, and Ops to turn models and marketplace insight into robust production systems, and to influence roadmap direction without formal authority.

- Mentor and grow engineers through code review, design guidance, and technical leadership by example.

- Identify and pay down structural technical debt, balancing long-term system health against a fast-moving business.

Basic Qualifications

- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience in backend development, distributed systems, or real-time data processing.

- Proficiency in one or more object-oriented or functional programming languages (e.g., Go, Java, Python).

- Track record of leading the design and delivery of complex, multi-quarter projects across team boundaries.

- Experience designing and operating high-throughput, low-latency production services.

- Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with marketplace, pricing, dispatch, forecasting, or other real-time decision systems where algorithm behavior has direct business impact.

- Experience partnering with data scientists or applied scientists to productionize models and experimental systems.

- Familiarity with real-time data streaming (e.g., Kafka, Flink) or large-scale time-series forecasting.

- Demonstrated technical leadership: mentoring engineers, driving design reviews, and raising operational standards in high-load systems.

- Proven ability to thrive in high-ambiguity problem spaces, exercising sound judgment on trade-offs with imperfect information.
