About the Team
Retail is a primary growth bet for Uber, bringing the on-demand delivery of almost, almost anything to consumers around the world. The Uber Retail team is a ‘startup within Uber’, standing up Uber’s Delivery business for everything outside restaurants (e.g. grocery, convenience, alcohol, pharma, pet, beauty, etc.), while leveraging the scale of our existing Uber Japan businesses (Restaurants and Mobility) and Uber’s global platform and technology.
About the Role
As the GM for Uber Retail in Japan, you’ll lead the overall business – including setting the country strategy, running day-to-day operations and owning the full P&L. This GM isn't just managing an existing business, but transforming how Japan shops and moving the market from traditional models to on-demand retail.
The Uber Retail business in Japan has been operating for 5+ years, and already partners with many of Japan’s leading Retailers (either directly on the Uber Eats app and/or providing last-mile fulfillment for their first party channels through Uber Direct). Due to an internal move of the previous GM, this role has recently opened up, and we’re looking for an experienced, passionate and innovative leader to drive the next chapter of growth.
What You’ll Do
- Strategy & Vision: Set and own the Japan Retail vision and strategy by translating global priorities into a locally relevant strategy across short-, mid-, and long-term horizons, informed by deep market, customer and competitive insights.
- Innovate for Japan: Identity step-change growth opportunities for Japan - everything from new business models to new ways to engage consumers. While Uber is a global company, it’s critical that we have innovative leaders in markets like Japan where local nuance is key.
- P&L Ownership: Own the full-country P&L for Japan Retail, driving sustainable revenue growth and EBITDA performance through disciplined financial planning and investment prioritization.
- People & Organization Leadership: Build, lead, and develop a high-performing commercial and operations organization, fostering strong culture, talent development, and execution excellence across direct and matrixed teams.
- Commercial Growth & Partnerships: Lead commercial acquisition and account management teams to secure, renew, and grow global, enterprise, and local retailer partnerships; negotiate sustainable commercial agreements; and unlock incremental value through ongoing investment and operational improvement opportunities.
- Operations & Customer Experience: Deliver operational excellence across the end-to-end customer, retailer and courier journey – ensuring reliability, quality, scalability, and efficiency while continuously identifying and resolving experience gaps and margin improvement opportunities.
- Cross-Functional Leadership & Governance: Influence and align cross-functional teams (e.g. Global Retail Operations, Restaurant & Mobility LT, Ads, Direct, Customer Support, Marketing, Business Development, Finance, Legal, Tax, Policy, People, Product & Engineering, etc.) to ensure Japan Retail’s priorities and plan are delivered on.
- External Representation: Act as the senior face of Uber Retail in Japan with retailers, CPGs, media, and policymakers.
What You’ll Need
- 15+ years of professional work experience in a related field (startup, tech, operations, strategy) in a GM-equivalent role, with bonus points for previous Retail and/or CPG experience
- Experience building and leading large teams, including sales and/or commercial teams
- A track record of business growth and innovation, particularly in the context of the JP market
- A bias to execution, with the ability to get into the weeds of the day-to-day operations (e.g. deal negotiations, operational performance, product planning, etc.)
- Strong analytical capabilities
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Business proficiency in English, and ideally Japanese
- Candidate also ideally has experience: managing a sizeable P&L, navigating matrixed and global organisations, sales and customer engagement at senior levels, representing your brand externally
